Naa .:. Queen, by Naa Kwarley Amissah - 2024. Acrylic painting on canvas, 30x40.
Naa Means "Queen"
In the Ghanaian language of Twi, their word for "queen" is "naa". In 2024, on my first trip to Ghana, I participated in an Afrikan Naming Ceremony where I was given my Afrikan name, Naa Kwarley. Just as they do with an infant born on the continent, the tribe's priest and other esteemed members gathered to contemplate the name that would be for me. In March 2024, I was welcome Home and into the Ga tribe of Ghana.
Naa Kwarley is my first name. My Ghanaian surname is Amissah, given to me by a friend that I have there. He was honored to give me his last name and proud that I use it proudly. I am honored to be called Queen - not only in Ghana, but also by the men and women in my circle living in the Afrikan Diaspora along with me.
The painting above was completed in 2024. Intentional Creativity led the way for me to integrate my new name with my Being. The Wisdom Codes that are coming down over her shoulder speak to my Afrikan name and place me in a place that my Ancestors held before being abducted - they were kings and queens. And now, I bear the name of Queen.
